Recap: August 13 Working Groups Kickoff Meeting
On August 13, 2024, we gathered at L. Claudia Allen Senior Center to kick off the Choice Neighborhoods Orlando working groups. Anyone interested was invited to come learn more about this next phase of the Choice Neighborhoods planning effort and specifically what the three working groups (Housing, Neighborhood, People) will be tasked with. Each working group will host a series of topic-specific discussions to review relevant data for each topic and propose actionable recommendations for strategies, partnerships, and resources that address HUD's goals and local priorities.
Here is a summary of what each group will focus on:
Housing
● Support for Existing Homeowners
● Growing Homeownership Opportunities
● Lake Mann/Lorna Doone Redevelopment (the technical work will be driven by the consulting team but requires community input in design, program, amenities, layout, etc.)
Neighborhood
● Neighborhood Improvement Projects
● Economic Development
● Healthy Food Options
● Public Safety
People
● Education: School Age Children
● Education: Early Learning
● Health and Wellness
● Support for Seniors and Persons with a Disability
● Income and Employment
There were approximately 50 attendees who reviewed the meeting presentation. Then each working group convened a breakout session to meet participants and share their hopes for this planning process. We are entering into a very busy season—there is so much work to be done to create a draft plan by March 2025! Each of the groups will have regular meetings scheduled for the remainder of the year. Stay tuned for dates, times, and locations.
It’s not too late to join! If you are interested in joining a working group, please email natalie@liftorlando.org
